The 2012 Nationals will be held on the Medway between Monday 23rd July and Friday 27th July, 2012. The host Club is the Medway Yacht Club. Please note the dates now because 2012 is a rather special year for the UK and particularly in our area! I am delighted that we have been able to secure both the dates and the Club and the MYC Nationals Committee is already hard at work making sure you get the best event we can deliver.
If you know the Medway, and we had a Nationals there in 2001, it isn’t the easiest water to set Windward/Leeward courses on. We will be taking you downriver towards the Thames to the wider bits, so a reliable outboard is essential kit!
However, the MYC shoreside facilities are second to none. Indeed, since our last Nationals there we have gained at least two more significant benefits, a Wise Hoist which makes launching/recovery a doddle (and currently, free to travellers), and Mark, our Cordon Bleu chef, whose meals are excellent value. As well as free camping on-site, we are working on some walking-distance accommodation.
The dates have been carefully chosen for several reasons. For you travellers, we have done our best to avoid clashes with other Sonata/UK events. On the contrary, we have tried hard to fit between the Southern ones. If you are coming from afar, you may like to consider arriving in the South earlier/departing later. Beforehand there is the RTI (Round the Isle of Wight), a Sonata Southerns, our Medway Regatta, 13,14,15th July, and afterwards, Cowes 11th – 18th August and then Burnham Week, end August, the first, Bank Holiday weekend of which will be the Sonata Easterns. Hopefully, then, we can expect Sonatas emigrating South en-masse in 2012!
And if you need even more encouragement, there is of course, the possibility of attending the Olympics in Stratford, using your Sonata as a base or commuting up on the high-speed rail link (15 minutes Strood – Stratford). The Olympics start on 27th July, the Friday at the end of our Nationals. Thus, it is entirely possible that we could adjust the timings on our last day of racing to let you get to the Opening Ceremony. Or, you could stay over and visit on the Saturday/Sunday. For info on what’s on and where, visit the official site at www.london2012.com/games The urgent requirement is to REGISTER NOW.
Tickets go on sale March 15th 2011. See the Olympic website. If you can give me some feedback as to level of interest in an Olympic visit, if any, then I can make some further suggestions about how we might help facilitate it.
We are all looking forward to a great event and we hope to entertain as many fellow Sonatas as possible.
Thanks for the advance notice on the dates and sorry for delay in responding. Saraband intend to be there for the 2012 Nationals and will look at options regarding Olympics and using the boat as accommodation somewhere closer to London.
