Single Point Lift

Hi Folks,

I am considering manufacturing/fitting a single lift point to attach onto the top of a couple of the keel bolts on my Sonata which I am about to restore.

Would need to cut a hole in the coachroof for the strop to pass through when lifting. Would this put the boat outwith class rules?

Has anyone done it before?

Any hints or tips?

Hello again Folks,

Further to my last, I have fitted a single point lift system into my Sonata, and today succesfully lifted it from the single point.

George,

I would be interested in the details as to how you have set up the single point lift.

I am coming into the class from the Tempest day keelboat class where we always lifted using wire strops. I have seen a Snotty lifted with webbing straps and cannot help feeling that the strop would be easier, safer and better for the boat.

Still can’t get my head round the benefit of the bridle system over a conventional traveller set up 🙂

Hi George,

Great idea. I race a sonata and would like to fit a single point lift, however I’m worried that doing so will take the boat out of class. I’ve checked the class rules and not sure if this mod would be accepted. Do you have an opinion?

Single point lift working well so far. My boat has been hanging from it for over a week now getting the bottom stripped/repaired/sanded.

Getting International VC Tar sprayed on next week hopefully.

I think the single point lift is a good way to lift the boat. My previous boat was an International Tempest day keelboat and we always lifted them using wire strops. Much lighter boat I know but the same principals apply.

It seems better on two fronts –

Security – The strops slung under the boat look horrible to me, liable to slide around, catch on guard rails and anything else that is hanging loose. In addition, unless a suitable spreader is used the boat could be squeezed. Whilst this will not break a Sonata it is not going to help preserve the hull to deck joint. At the Medway most of the guys use a strop system that does not have a spreader. So far I have paid extra to use a traveling hoist that is kinder on the boat and probably gets the job done more quickly.

Speed – It is very quick to hook up the boat and lift it. This can make the begining and end of events a lot more pleasant. With everything organised well it should easily be possible to move 15 boats in an hour.

The only problem that I would have adopting the system is that my keel bolts are glassed in, a feature shared with some other Sonatas. This means, I believe, that the bolts are studs screwed into the keel with nuts inside the hull. Hunter’s advice was, I understand, not to touch them.

If I ignored the advice, I would have to remove the rear studs and replace them with longer ones to accomodate the plate across the top. This might mean detaching the whole keel in order to get a grip on the studs that need to come out. I would probably want professional help with this which would make the job rather expensive unless there was another reason to remove the keel.

This would be the only objection I could see to allowing the system. If people do the job badly on boats like mine, the boat could be damaged or rendered unsafe.

Other than that it appears to be a modification that modernises the boat without having any impact on performance.

The only mod that I would make to the system shown in the gear tips section is to fit a screw in hatch in the cabin floor to give rapid access to the lift points.
