I need to replace my outboard. I had a Suzuki 9.5 saildrive that seemed more than enough. Has anyone had any experience with using electric outboards ? What is a good brand. WHat specification works. I have 6.7 modified.

I haven’t used an electric outboard for several years, so they may be better now, but basically you get 1 HP per 750 Watts theoretical max. Thats probably enough on flat water to do 2-3 knots, but in any chop I guess you would be drawing 100 Amps plus from your battery to do similar speeds, so it wouldn’t last long – then you have to recharge a big battery. I think the answer is that electric is OK on canals and small rivers for light boats if you have provision for charging, but you can forget it for anything else. A 3.5 Tohatsu is a fine, simple engine and the cheapest and smallest you could get away with! Equivalent batteries would weigh much more!
