keel box alterations ???

18th February 2008

Hi

My dad has just bought a sonata (rhapsody) and have noticed cracking around the hull where keel meets hull.

Having read the bulletin board i understand that this is due to play between keel and hull as when it sits on the cradle the weight off the hull is taken up by the keel and once in water then it can move around.

I was wondering if this is correct ?

Secondly i was thinking off trying to resolve the situation by dropping the keel off the boat, and filling the void area between keel and hull to ensure there is no play between the 2 with a epoxy/microballon mixture. I know that this is common practice on bigger boats and was hoping to find out if anyone else has tried this and if it was sucsesful ??

In order to ensure that the keel can be detached again mould release agenet is added on to the keel and then sikaflex is used to make a watertight seal. I would also be using boat hoist to do the work if i know it will work.

Looking forward to scottish series, when the burns family will have there 1st competitve outing on the boat.

Thanks in advance for any help on this topic.

Hi Robbie,

Afraid I can’t help you with the keel bolt issue, I’m new to this myself and will be interested to see what is said!!

Just wanted to say hi! Oh and you beat me to Rhapsody by about a month!!

I’ve since bought Argento ( formerly Osanta ) and intend to race out of Cardwell Bay, Gourock. Will you be sailing on the Clyde or are you further afield?

Cheers for now,

Ross.

Hi guys welcome to this great class.

Robbie, the problem with the keel cracking and rust marks coming through is common to Sonatas, Impalas and Sigma 33 and you are right it is when the boat is out of the water and sitting on the keel that the whole rest of the weight of the boat presses down causing the crack to open. The best results I have had in trying to stop it is to carefully run a fine bladed angle grinder along the straight edges and the rounded ends with a Dremmel. This reveals the rust around the keel I then clean this as best I can, paint it with Kurust then several coats of underwater metal paint and then I have filled it with Sikaflex and this has given the best result in terms of lasting for a couple of years but it always seems to set in a little groove and not completely flush I therefore tend to fill it with underwater fillers to get a flush finish. The Sikaflex clearly allows that little bit of movement between the hull and the keel and I would imagine that your proposal would work for a while but I am not sure I would go to that effort. I too would like to know what others do and I have owned one for 15 years.

Ross

Good to hear you are going to be racing do you plan to come to the East Patch we get up to 12 on Wednesdays and you would be most welcome.

Best wishes to you both

Robbie,

Don’t think I’ll be ready for the Scottish series this year but it’s definately on the cards for next year. Need to get sorted out with a measurement certificate first and as the interior of the boat has been altered I may have to do some work first. Maybe someone on here could help me with what is needed to get this!?!

Peter,

Thanks for the invite, sounds great. Can I still join in without a certificate for now?? I know Cardwell Bay aren’t too strict about this sort of thing cause they’re just happy to get the numbers but Helensburgh may take things a bit more seriously!!

The only other issue is that I race dinghies out of Royal West on Wednesdays and they may fall out with me if I defect cause we struggle for numbers there too!! :D But I’d rather get some experience in the Sonata!!

If you could send me some details I’d certainly be interested in making what races I can. Even if I don’t figure in the results!! The boat is fully insured to race with up to

Hi Ross,

The notice of race is not yet available for the EP series of races for 2008 but will be shortly. There are 4 series the Spring series which is general handicap on a Sunday e(you would need a cyca handicap certificate for that) not many boats do this. Primary points – 8 races Summer Cup 4-races and Secondary points 7 races all Wed evenings and the Autumn Series 7 races on Sundays. Individual series can be entered but I will let you have the details as soon as they are available. If you wish to contact me at anytime my phone number is 01436676497 or email peterdbooth@talktalk.net.

Sorry Robbie we seem to taking over your original message.

Ross,

If the sole reason you can’t do Scottish Series is that you have yet to get a measurement certificate then I know in the past that both the organisers and the fleet have been lenient to that situation – and on at least one occasion I can recall a boat being measured during the event by Martin Hartley!

I’ll be racing at Tarbert and if you want to make the effort to get your boat to the event I for one am happy for you to race in the class and if you beat me (you probably will on last year’s performance by me!) then so be it…………..and if Martin’s at the event he’ll probably measure your boat for you!

regards

Mark

Hi,

Welcome to the class. I’m sure you’ll thoroughly enjoy the best value one design racing in the country. Great to see such increased interest. Murray Caldwell (NH Sails) said he was getting one again – could be another great class at Tarbert this year.

Osanta competed at Scottish Series (I was crew a couple of times). I’m sure it had a measurement certificate then – Jim (the previous owner ) carried a corrector weight and everything. Anyway at Scottish Series we value participation above the paperwork and as long as you are sailing a Sonata with Sonata sails you will be very welcome. Martin Hartley the class Technical rep is still planning to be along to Tarbert anyway in A Sharp Exit.

Kip regatta (www.kipmarina.co.uk) is usually our first of the season and the Tarbert warm up.

Come along and we can all meet up.

Cheers,

Neil

Hi all,

Just to add to Neil’s comments, Murray has bought another Snotty as yet it has a hole in it so I don’t know if he will make Scottish series but it seems like a fair handicap perhaps SG should have the same for the Nats.

Does anyone have any comments on the keel for Robbie?

Back on the keel question. I had a similar problem – we dry sail the boat we we could see the rust during the season easily enough. Not sure exactly what te yard did but think it was something like epoxy the keel in to reduce the flex – seems to have worled as pretty much all gone apart from the leading edge.

Hope this helps
