We get the occasional question about checkstays, often from people who are new to the fleet. I’ve no desire to open (or reopen) a debate on whether they are necessary or not – it’s an individual decision allowed within the rules and since masts fall down very rarely (fortunately) I don’t think any debate will be supported by very good statistics. However, it would be good to hear from some people who have checkstays on their boats and do or don’t use them. Are they much trouble to use in practice? Can anyone offer a do-it-yourself “How to fit your checkstays” article? If anyone is willing to rough out a few words and provide photos or sketches then I’m willing to tart it up for the web site. Please reply to the board if you have any experience to contribute or please contact me (webmaster@sonata.org.uk) if you’re willing to have a bash at writing a short article for the hints and tips section of the site. Enduring fame could be yours!
